Resting ECG Test
A resting ECG (electrocardiogram) is a simple, non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your heart while you are at rest.
These tests are quick and painless and provide valuable information about your heart's health, helping doctors make informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment.
The main purposes of resting ECG tests:
Diagnosing Heart Conditions: It helps diagnose various heart conditions, such as arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), heart attacks, and other cardiac abnormalities.
Evaluating Symptoms: If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or palpitations, a resting ECG can help determine if these are related to heart problems.
Monitoring Heart Health: It monitors the heart's health over time, especially in patients with known heart conditions.
Pre-Surgical Assessment: Evaluating a patient's heart function before surgery can be part of a pre-surgical assessment.
Routine Checkups: It can be included in routine checkups to screen for heart conditions before any signs or symptoms develop.
Use of resting ECG tests
Preparation: No special preparation is needed. However, you may be asked to avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and smoking before the test.
Procedure: During the test, you will lie down, and a technician will attach 12 electrodes (sticky patches) to your chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes are connected to the ECG machine.
Recording: The machine records the electrical signals from your heart, displayed as waves on a monitor or printed on paper.
Duration: The test usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes.
Data Analysis: A healthcare professional analyzes The recorded data to identify any abnormalities in heart rhythm, structure, or function.
Post-Test: You can resume normal activities immediately after the test. Your healthcare provider will review the results with you and discuss any necessary follow-up or treatment.
