Ultrasound Spirometry
Ultrasound spirometry is a type of pulmonary function test that uses ultrasound technology to measure the flow and volume of air that you can inhale and exhale.
It is a non-invasive, safe, and effective way to assess lung function and diagnose respiratory conditions. It provides valuable information that helps doctors make informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment.
Main purposes of ultrasound spirometry tests:
Diagnosing Respiratory Conditions: It helps in diagnosing conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other disorders that affect breathing.
Monitoring Lung Function: It monitors lung function over time, especially in patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
Evaluating Treatment: Doctors use it to assess the effectiveness of treatments for respiratory conditions, such as medications or inhalers.
Pre-Surgical Assessment: A lung function evaluation can be part of a pre-surgical assessment to prepare a patient for surgery.
Use of ultrasound spirometry tests:
Preparation: Before the test, you may be asked to avoid heavy meals, smoking, or vigorous exercise. You should also wear loose clothing to ensure comfort during the test.
Procedure: During the test, you will be asked to breathe into a mouthpiece connected to the spirometer. The device uses ultrasound waves to measure the speed and volume of air as you breathe in and out.
Breathing Maneuvers: To measure different aspects of lung function, you may be asked to perform various breathing manoeuvres, such as taking a deep breath and exhaling forcefully.
Data Analysis: The spirometer records the data, which is then analyzed by healthcare professionals to determine lung function and identify any abnormalities.
